MELBOURNE: A court here has ordered that more than 3,000 dangerous toys seized from a Melbourne company be destroyed because they posed serious safety hazards, including the risk of death.

Import and wholesale company, Basal Sports & Tech, and its owner, Bruce Bin Chen, have also been banned from supplying toys and other products subject to safety standards until they have implemented an approved compliance programme, The Age newspaper reported.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court made the orders after it found the company had supplied a dozen blacklisted and unsafe toys to retailers.

The products, including toy rifles, darts, archery bows and elasticised yo-yo balls posed strangulation hazards as well as the risk of serious eye injuries, including blindness.

Other toys, such as bath toys and drawing boards, which looked less dangerous, were found to pose choking risks, which could cause fatalities. — Bernama
