Two motorists fined for reckless driving

KOTA KINABALU: The Traffic Court here yesterday fined two local motorists for reckless driving.

Jeniwil Kikau, 38, was fined RM3,000, in default, two months’ jail while Mohd Amin Tajudin, 27, was fined RM5,500, in default, three months’ jail.

Magistrate Herlina Muse convicted the two accused under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 1994) which carries a fine of between RM4,000 and RM10,000 and a jail term of up to 12 months, upon conviction.

The court also ordered the conviction to be endorsed on Mohd Amin’s driving licence.

The duo were caught committing the offence at Km 14 of Jalan Tuaran and Jalan Coastal here respectively, between Oct 1, 2011 and April 12, this year.

According to the facts of the case, Jeniwil was involved in an accident when a motorcycle hit his car while he was making a U-turn.

Jeniwil failed to make sure that there was no oncoming vehicle when making the U-turn.

Meanwhile, for Mohd Amin, he drove so fast on that day and crashed into a motorcyclist in front of his car.

The motorcyclist was thrown off while Jeniwil fled the scene, but several days after that he lodged a police report on the accident.

In the same court, three local men were each fined RM2,000, in default, 30 days’ jail for driving their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

Berandine Philip Lakun, 32, Benedict Leo Stephen, 34, and Adrian Ong Kok Chung, 26, admitted to committing the offence framed under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides for a maximum fine of RM6,000, or with a jail term of up to 12 months, upon conviction.

Traffic prosecuting officer Assistant Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt told the court that the three accused were arrested during an operation at Jalan Kolam here on June 17.
