SEPANG: Low-cost carrier, AirAsia Bhd, bagged four prestigious awards for its excellent performance last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Awards ceremony Tuesday night.
The airline won the awards for ‘Airline of The Year’, ‘Low Cost Airline of The Year’, ‘Foreign Airline of The Year’ (Indonesia AirAsia) and ‘Best South East Asia Airline’.
KLIA Awards, introduced in 2006, is the sole award ceremony in the country that pays tribute to the best performers in the aviation industry.
Malaysia Airport chairman Tan Sri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah said the KLIA Awards was the ideal platform for Malaysia Airports to reward its partners that have capitalised on the strong recovery of the global aviation industry last year by further enhancing their performance.
“The aviation industry has a high multiplier impact on the economy in terms of facilitating tourism and trade and investment activities.
“As the nation’s main airport operator, Malaysia Airports has a huge responsibility to consistently provide efficient and competitive airport operation.
“Preliminary numbers up to June 2012 showed a total volume of 32.5 million passengers.
“KLIA alone indicated a growth of 4.8 per cent in passenger movement in the first half of the year compared with the same period last year,” he said in his speech at the presentation yesterday.
Wan Abdul also said the establishment of the Nation Aviation Council (NAC) was indeed timely and appropriate towards facilitating a better planned and systematic growth of Malaysia’s aviation industry.
The NAC will be responsible for coordinating all policies related to the aviation industry.
“It will also act as an intermediary body to find resolutions for issues arising between Malaysia’s air travel industry players,” he added. — Bernama
