MIRI: Malaysians must not be shy to fly the country’s flag during the weeks up to Independence Day on Aug 31.

More than 600 people from various government departments, private sector, and community leaders attended the “Fly Jalur Gemilang Miri Division 2012” campaign in Miri Civic Centre Tuesday night.

“As citizens of Malaysia, we must not be shy to fly the country’s flag wherever we are, be it at home, shops, office, school, or even on our vehicles,” said Assistant Minister of Communication and Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin who officiated at the launch of the campaign.

Lee believed Malaysians should be proud to fly the Jalur Gemilang on their own initiative without waiting for instructions or others to take the lead, because it represented the country’s sovereignty and pride at the world level, besides being an obligation as citizens to show appreciation for enjoying independence.

“Before independence, our economy and education were backward, and many people could not afford schooling, with many living from day to day.

“Over the past 55 years, government leaders have taken steps to reduce the people’s burden,” he said.

The prime minister’s brainchild in the 1Malaysia Concept is unique, and Lee pointed out that it symbolised a commitment to help the country achieve the best through various programmes like BR1M, KR1M, TR1MA, 1Malaysia water tank aid, 1Malaysia book vouchers, 1Malaysia housing, 1Malaysia Clinic, 1Malaysia notebooks, 1Malaysia vitamin, school cash aid, and many others.

“We can witness for ourselves how these programmes showed how promises were being honoured in line with the ‘People First’ principle,” he said.

Lee was accompanied by organising chairman and Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau and Miri deputy Resident Emang Oyo Emang.
