SIBU: Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah lauded the Prime Minister’s announcement on ‘Dana Sukarelawan 1Malaysia’ (DRe1M) as a move to further strengthen youths’ role in nation building.

Describing this as a step forward, he said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s announcement reflected the government’s effort to mould a new generation of youth that are caring, progressive and forward looking.

“What PM has announced is a reflection that all sectors of the society, including the youth are not forgotten by the BN government.

“The government acknowledges the important role of youth in nation building and seeks to mould a new generation of youth that are caring, progressive and forward looking,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, told The Borneo Post through an SMS recently.

He was asked on Najib’s announcement of several special incentives for youths in the country.

According to Bernama, a special fund or DRe1M would be set up with an allocation of RM100 million for the benefit of youth organisations, non-governmental organisations and youth groups who are not members of any organisation, to carry out beneficial programmes.

Najib was reported to have said the fund was meant for youths to carry out voluntary activities like ‘gotong-royong’, cleaning up beaches, and so on.

Karim said: “The funds are meant for active youth bodies to organise activities for the betterment of youth in general. This way, we hope the youth would become better responsible citizen, caring, and positive in outlook when facing challenges of the future.”

Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee believed the initiative would strengthen the spirit of volunteerism among the youths while promoting racial interaction.

“More youths would be involved in voluntary activities, inculcating the spirit of volunteerism among them, so that being future leaders, they will have people at heart,” Dr Annuar said.
