MUAR: The Education Ministry will study views from the community, the National Union of the Teaching Profession and parents before deciding whether to allow students to bring mobile phones to school next year.
Its minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the decision, which was made at the ministry’s Student Disciplinary Committee level, had yet to be finalised.
Muhyiddin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said he had yet to give his final say and would consult the Attorney-General’s Chambers on the idea as it was related to the law.
“We will take into account the views for and against the idea,” he told reporters after addressing pensioners from the Pagoh parliamentary constituency here yesterday.
He was commenting on mixed reaction to a decision to allow students to bring electronic gadgets, including mobile phones and iPad to school next year.
Muhyiddin said the proposal took into account current development as it would enable students to contact their school or parents during emergency as the rules prevented them from bringing mobile phones.
“But we also have to consider the views that the gadgets could cause a lot of problems, including disruptions in the classroom as students might be distracted with the internet, their Facebook and Twitter,” he said while thanking various parties for their views. — Bernama
