KUCHING: A father charged with abusing his daughter and son will be tried in the magistrates’ court on Aug 1 and 2.

Nilson Slam, 30, from Kampung Siol Kandis appeared before Magistrate Maris Agan who released him on extended bail pending the trial.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge when the case was first mentioned in court, and maintained his innocence when the case appeared for management yesterday.

Nilson allegedly abused his 9-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son at their house at Kampung Siol Kandis at about noon on July 8.

The brief facts of the case stated that the accused was drunk when he assaulted his children.

He was said to have kicked his son on the abdomen, grabbed his hand and hit his face, causing his eyes to swell.

When the boy attempted to escape, his father kicked him, causing him to fall then stepped on his chest.

The son ran out from the house when he saw his father acting aggressively towards his sister, whom he also kicked.

Both youngsters were bruised and swollen. Their mother lodged a police report over the incident.

Both children were referred to hospital where a doctor confirmed that they had injuries on the eyes, forearm and body.

Nilson will be tried under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 which carries a jail of term of up to 10 years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both upon conviction. DPP Samira Khalili prosecuted.
