SIBU: Police have taken down a professional vehicle theft gang with the arrest of its mastermind and three members.

Sibu police chief ACP Shaife Ismail told a media conference yesterday that the habitual thieves were also drug addicts.

“The police are still identifying the rest of the members who are still at large,” he said, adding that the exact number had yet to be established.

Police also recovered four stolen cars – a Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Wish, Toyota Corona and Proton Aeroback — from the suspects.

“The Proton Aeroback was dismantled of its parts and replaced with parts from other cars. The group sold the stolen vehicles they stole in Sibu to neighbouring towns,” added Shafie.

The syndicate is also suspected to have been involved in housebreakings.
