State Sukma athletes RM426,750 richer

BIGGEST PAYOUT: Some of the 13-member state swimming team are in jubilant mood after they collectively received a windfall of RM99,750 with national top distance swimmer Vernon Lee personally receiving RM19,000 for the three golds he won.

KUCHING: As promised, Sarawak government paid out a whopping RM426,750 cash incentives to deserving state Sukma athletes who brought home not only medals but honour and glory to the state.

Out of the total amount, RM346,000 were for those who captured gold medals at July 7-16 games.

To further motivate the athletes and as a token for their hard work, the incentive for the second gold medal was increased to RM7,000 after the they bagged the first gold which carries a RM5,000 cash incentive.

However, the incentive for a silver medal won remained at RM750 while the bronze is RM500.

State swimming team members received a windfall of RM99,750, with national top distance swimmer Vernon Lee personally receiving RM19,000 for the three golds he won.

Women’s volleyball team received the second highest payout of RM60,000 as each of the 12-member team received RM5,000 while wushu exponents received RM43,750 for their seven gold, seven silver and three bronze medals tally.

They are followed by archery (RM32,250), athletics (RM30,750), ten-pin bowling (RM23,250), taekwondo (RM22,500), squash (RM20,500), weightlifting (RM19,000), petanque (RM18,000), cycling (RM12,000), diving (RM11,250) and artistic gymnastics (RM10,000).

Meanwhile, the women’s sepak takraw team received RM8,500 while pencak silat (RM7,500), lawn bowls (RM3,500), karate-do (RM2,500) and boxing (RM2,000).

The above incentives were paid to the athletes from southern and central regions while those from the northern region received theirs at a hotel in Miri last night.
