KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 33,000 poor people in Terengganu have received Ramadan and Aidilfitri aid totalling RM14 million from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) this year.

Maidam chief executive officer Wan Harujan Sulaiman said the aid was aimed at enabling the poor in the state to prepare for Ramadan and the upcoming Aidilfitri.

“We have completed the distribution of the aid to the poor through their local community leaders last week,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

Wan Harujan said this year each family of the poor was given between RM350 and RM450 as compared to only RM300 per family previously.

He said Maidam had collected over RM88 million in zakat (tithe), including RM7 million in zakat fitrah (personal tithe), last year and had anticipated to collect about RM100 million in zakat this year.

Apart from opening its zakat counters statewide, Maidam had also deployed mobile zakat counters to various areas, including Felda settlements and night markets to facilitate the customers to pay their zakat, he added. — Bernama
