KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) zakat counters will be operating seven days a week, including on public holiday, throughout the month of Ramadan to facilitate the customers to pay their zakat (tithe).

The counters are located in Shamelin, National Mosque, Wangsa Maju, Precinct 9 Putrajaya, At-Taqwa Mosque in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Daruzzakah, Abdul Rahman bin Auf Mosque in Puchong, Imam Al-Ghazali Mosque in Kepong and Labuan.

The counters will open from 8.15am to 4.30pm.

MAIWP chief executive officer Muhammad Yamin Ismail said the zakat fitrah (tithe payment per person in Ramadan) rate in
Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan remained at RM7 and MAIWP had anticipated to collect RM8 million in zakat fitrah this year.

“In 2011, MAIWP collected RM7.55 million in zakat fitrah from 1,075,000 customers, an increase from the RM7.07 million collected from 1,005,000 customers in 2010,” he said in a statement.

He also advised Muslims to pay their zakat to the appointed MAIWP amil (collectors) and ensure that they only receive
zakat coupon issued by MAIWP to prevent fraud.
