SECOND BEST: The Sarawak cricket team poses with their medals and trophy after the prize presentation ceremony of the MCA Challenge Title.

KUCHING: The state cricket team emerged runner-up to Negeri Sembilan in the MCA Challenge Title 2012 at Kinrara Oval Kuala Lumpur recently.

Sarawak on winning the toss opted to be fielded first. However, it was Negeri Sembilan who outpaced Sarawak by batting cautiously to score 238 runs for nine wickets and they were declared on 72.5 overs in the first inning.

The Sarawak bowlers who took the wickets were Chew Pok Cheong three for 61 runs and Ali Hamza from Swinburne University Sarawak, two for 43 runs.

Sarawak’s team chasing Negeri’s first innings total came close by scoring 207 run off their limited 75 overs for the loss of nine wickets.

The state’s batsmen who contributed to the runs were Nasir Ali with 76 runs, Ashen Jayasinghe and Gordon Chung both score 32 runs respectively and Maxwell Stephen 25 runs.

With a lead of 11 runs, Negeri went on to score 257 runs in their 2nd innings before declaring losing six wickets.

Sarawak’s Maxwell Stephen took two wickets for 30 runs while Ashen Jayasinghe two wickets for 50 runs.

They need to score 289 runs for victory in about an hour of play left, Sarawak decided to go for it but it was never to be as they fail to reach the target with the limited time available to bat. Only Nasir Ali with 24 runs and Ashen Jayasinghe on 12 runs had double figures.

Sarawak Cricket Association President Awang Mahyan said the Sarawak cricket team has done well to reach the final of the MCA Challenge Title.

“The team has learned and developed from this outing and come back strongly next year,”  Mahyan told thesundaypost at the association’s office yesterday.

While thanking the assistance given by the Sarawak Ministry of Social Development for making this trip possible, he also added that the team will now focus on getting ready for the General Soon Trophy to be held this November in Sarawak and the Borneo Cup in December in Kota Kinabalu.

Awang also disclosed that the association has planned to kick-start their Junior Cricket Center of Excellence in cooperation with a few schools in Kuching to unearth new talents in preparation for 2013 junior tournaments.
