NEW DELHI: India’s former finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, was elected its 13th president yesterday.
He won against former lower house parliament speaker P A Sagma with a huge margin.
Of the 748 members of parliament, 527 voted for Pranab, and 296 for Sagma.
Pranab will replace the current and first woman president, Pratibha Patil, whose five-year term ends on Wednesday.
The new president will be administered the oath of office by the chief justice of India on July 25. — Bernama
