KUALA BELAIT: The month of Ramadhan has always been a source of opportunity for small scale businesses to make more profits than the other months. Apart from the well-known Ramadhan stalls at Tudung Saji, Jln Setia Diraja, Gerai Ramadhan at Wisma Yakin Complex in Pandan 5 has gained its own popularity among residents of Belait District particularly those living in Kg Pandan, Borneo Bulletin reported.
Awg Mohd Yusof bin Hj Mohd Daud, the manager of Wisma Yakin Complex, in an interview with the Bulletin stated that the main objective of having Ramadhan stalls at the complex is for charity as proceeds from the plot rentals will be donated to Belait orphans through the district office.
He further added that since 2006 the complex has given opportunities for small scale businesses every Ramadhan with rental at B$50 per plot. “The plots are situated at the empty space of the complex and it is suitable to run stalls as it is clean and hygienic apart from giving customers an alternative of a less crowded venue for them to look for sungkai food,” the manager explained.
Masni binti Sidi, one of the loyal traders at the complex said that she has been selling her homemade food there since the complex started the Gerai Ramadhan. “I feel comfortable having my stall here as the place is clean and we have our own frequent customers over the years,” said Masni. Some of her hot selling items are Pulut Panggang, Nasi Berempah, Nasi Katok Butter Chicken and also a Sarawakian delicacy, Bubur Pedas.
Another stall owned by the mother of Awg Mohd Yusof, Hjh Sharifah Aisah binti Saikh Said, is known especially for her unique Nasi Arab as well as Nasi Lemak.
Food items at the complex move fast as frequent customers usually drop by the complex on their way back home from work. Apart from food, there is also a stall selling Songkok especially for Raya festivity.
“It is easy to look for food here as it is not crowded like the other places and the most important thing is they do not have to be under the scorching sun as well as heat from barbeque stands,” said Mahmud bin Bujang and his wife, Mariam from Kg Sungai Teraban who decided to shop for their sungkai food at the complex yesterday. In terms of food varieties, they claimed that stalls at the complex have many different kinds of delicacies to choose from.
