KUCHING: It is important for all Muslims to carry out their social responsibilities, be it distribution of bubur lambuk and festive goodies or paying the zakat.
Zakat is a pillar of Islam that plays a role in ‘cleansing the soul’ – a religious obligation that moulds Muslims into individuals that care about their community, said Resource Planning Assistant Minister Datuk Naroden Majais.
Naroden, who is also Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development assistant minister, said during RTM’s Majlis Tautan Kasih yesterday that zakat was channelled to those who qualify for it.
“Zakat can create a great impact on the economy of the recipients and their families,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony were Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan, Broadcasting director-general Dato Norhyati Ismail and Sarawak Broadcasting deputy director Fee Lin Chew.
During the Majlis Tautan Kasih, Naroden handed out goodie bags to 50 RTM retirees and 31 orphans from Rumah Amal Nur Murni. The orphans also received Raya money.
RTM also contributed to Rumah Amal Nur Murni, the Salvation Army Home and the House of Peace welfare home.
Earlier RTM’s ‘Badan Ukwah dan Kebajikan Tenaga Islam’ or Bakti together with Beras Corporation Sdn Bhd (Bernas) organised a bubur pedas and bubur lambuk distribution for RTM staff.
Both events were part of the Sarawak leg of RTM’s nationwide Merdeka Raya Programme. The programme begins in the month of Ramadan with corporate social responsibility deeds that carry on through the Aidilfitri celebration and Merdeka month.
RTM is shooting for a spot under the Malaysia Book of Records for the most CSR events in the month of Ramadan, passing the baton across the country in a rally that began July 20 and ends Aug 31.
RTM is also celebrating the 66th anniversary of their Broadcasting Department.
