DPM to break fast with Sepanggar Umno

KOTA KINABALU: Sepanggar Umno division will be hosting a Sungkai (breaking of fast) event for Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin this Saturday.

Karambunai assemblywoman Datuk Jainab Ahmad said Sepanggar had this year been entrusted to organize the fast breaking for Zone II, which also covers Kota Kinabalu, Putatan and Penampang parliamentary constituencies.

“The event will provide an opportunity for the community and BN leaders to get together and break fast with the country’s number two leader,” she said.

The event will be hosted at Masjid Jamek Likas starting from 3.30pm.

Jainab told this to the media after presenting Moreh assistance to committee members of some 50 mosques and surau in the Karambunai constituency.

On a separate development, Jainab said she highly welcomed the setting up of a special committee to handle victims of kidnap and violent crimes, particularly those involving children and women.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein announced last week that the committee would comprise the police and non-governmental organisations which fit the ministry’s criteria and be finalised at a meeting next week.

“Social illnesses, such as crimes involving women and children, are complex issues that required the support and participation of all parties to address.

“While this committee would play a significant role in helping the victims, other efforts must also be taken towards preventing the crime from taking place.

“In this regards, women themselves should learn how to protect themselves by avoiding circumstances where they can become victims, while parents should know the whereabouts of their children at all times,” she said.

Jainab, who is also Assistant Resource Development and Information Minister, also informed that Sepanggar People Development Unit will be assisting Pusat Zakat Sabah to distribute tithe collection among the poor from 20 villages in Karambunai, starting today.

In conjunction with the fasting month and the coming Aidil Fitri, she said Sepanggar Umno division would also distribute Hari Raya cookies to the armed forces in and around the constituency in recognition of their sacrifices and contribution.
