KAPIT: The Women’s Development and Family Council (WDFC) and the National Family Development and Census Board are formed to assist women and take care of their welfare, explained Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said each parliamentary constituency in the country had been directed to set up its own ‘Women Development and Family Council’ under the auspices of the National Family Development and Census Board headed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“This clearly indicates that women and family development matters are a big deal and one of the government’s priorities under the 1Malaysia concept, whereby all strata of society will not be left out of the mainstream of development,” he said when officiating at the Mesra Rakyat programme organised by the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) in collaboration with Community Development Office (Kemas) at Rumah Engking Kedal at Jalan Selirik, Sungai Amang over the weekend.
He said WDFC was running various programmes like marriage counselling, courses on family upbringing, handicraft making and cooking for women.
He thanked WDFC Kapit headed by Datin Marie Therese Blikau, wife of Katibas assemblyman Datuk Ambrose Blikau, for organising the ‘Jejari Bestari’ (Smart Craft) programme that involved 47 women at Rumah Engking.
Noting that handicraft making had long been a past-time for the rural community, Nanta called on the womenfolk to make handicraft making a commercial venture instead of producing items just for their own use.
On the Mesra Rakyat programme, Nanta was happy to note that it was attended by more than 1,000 people.
Among those present at the function were his wife Datin Angelina Celestine Ujang, Blikau, Marie Therese, Ninth Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier-General Datuk Stephen Mundaw, Kapit Resident Dahim Nadot, Kapit District Officer Elvis Didit, political secretary to the chief minister Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Kapit District Council deputy walikota Jefferson Jamit Unyat.
