KUCHING: An 18-year-old student escaped with only minor injuries after she fell from the third floor of her hostel and landed on a mattress at a university in Samarahan yesterday.

The student, who enrolled at the university in June, was spotted by security guards sitting by the window ledge of her room around 10am.

Noticing that the girl appeared emotionally distressed, the guards grabbed a thick mattress from the storeroom and placed it directly beneath her before alerting the hostel warden.

A source said the warden immediately went to the girl’s room and spoke with her to find out why she was sitting on the edge of the window.

However, the girl was said to have slipped and fell, but was lucky to have struck an awning on each floor, which broke her fall, before landing on the mattress.

She was subsequently taken to Sarawak General Hospital where she was treated for minor scratches and bruises.

When contacted yesterday, Samarahan District Police Chief DSP Abdul Rahman Ahmad confirmed receiving a report of a girl slipping from the third floor of her hostel, but said the university concerned would deal with the matter.
