SANDAKAN: Elected representatives in the state have been asked to hold more ‘turun padang’ (going to the ground to attend to people’s needs) activities during Ramadan, particularly to help the less fortunate.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the activities should include handing out contributions to this group in society to help lessen their burden while carrying out their religious obligation of fasting.

“Also, hold more activities at the surau and mosques, such as breaking of fast with the local community, as this will help forge closer ties between the elected representatives and people.”

Musa said this at the handing-out of contributions from the Libaran Umno division and Sabah Zakat Centre to several poor individuals and senior citizens in Kampung Kenangan Manis, here yesterday.

He said the government did not forget the less fortunate who needed assistance in going through Ramadan followed by the Raya celebration during the month of Syawal. Earlier, in his speech, Musa said the prevailing peace in this country had enabled people of the Islamic faith to fast in comfort.

He said the situation was different in a number of Islamic countries like Syria where there were turbulence and violence.

In this regard, he urged the people of this country to ensure that Malaysia remained peaceful by not getting involved in activities that could bring instability or chaos. — Bernama
