KUCHING: With some of Kuching’s best female players on their roster, Team Pest defeated Wung Chen to lift the recent Kuching Open Women’s title held at the MBKS Indoor Stadium.
They made to the finals with a dominating display in the group stage where they won all their matches including the defeat of worthy fellow finalist Wung Chen.
Fielding players like forward Tay Siaw Ming, Wung Chen had their work cut out despite having a good crop of cagers like former national players Bong Yi Ke and former state player Liew Pek Yong.
Pest coach, Voon Soon Liong said he intended to use the team’s youth factor to the advantage for a fast tempo attacking game.
Wung Chen started off their campaign with all the right moves to end the first quarter with a five point margin and managed to maintain their positive play to end the first half with a slim 23-20 cushion.
Unfortunately for their coach, Ng Kim Eng it was all downhill from then on.
A combination of stalwart defending and offence saw Pest taking the lead with Wung Chen trying to make a game of it but only managed to narrow the deficit to seven points.
With 28 third quarter points, Pest entered the final quarter with a commanding 16 points cushion and holding onto that until the match ends 62-41 in his favour.
As a team, the Kuching Open is their season ender. However, for most of their players, the season continues as they will be looking to make the Kuching team bound for the Sarawak Inter-Division Championship.
Players like forward Tay Siaw Ming, guard Chong Ik Mei and centre Chong Chang Fei are expected to make the cut.
