‘Sarawak Women in Politics’ to be launched Oct 6

KUCHING: A book on women politicians in the state is expected to be launched at the state level Women’s Day celebration on Oct 6.

The book, entitled ‘Sarawak Women in Politics’, which is currently in its final stage of editing will feature 27 women politicians who were actively involved in the state politics from various eras.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah who said this to members of the press yesterday said the book was written and compiled by the Sarawak Women and Family Council (MWKS) committee.

“The book is in its editing phase and it will feature various women politicians from all eras including those from the opposition party,” she said and added that the book would be completed in September in time for the launch.

She elaborated that the book among others would feature the state’s first legislative assemblywomen Datuk Seri Tra Zehnder, the first women minister in the state Datuk Ajibah Abol and Datuk Hafsah Harun.

Meanwhile, Fatimah, who earlier on chaired the second annual MWKS meeting at Wisma Wanita said the meeting discussed several issues such as preparation for the upcoming Women’s Day celebration.

Apart from that, matters concerning divorced non-Muslim couples such as finding the right support system to assists single mothers were also discussed.

Highlighting another related issue concerning syariah law, Fatimah said a current key focus area at the moment was to familiarise women with the syariah law relating to family issues and MWKS is looking at ways to achieve this such as holding talks and seminars.

The meeting yesterday was attended by MWKS committee members from all over the state.
