LIMBANG: A foreigner was arrested in an attempt to smuggle an assortment of contraband cigarettes and liquor into the country under Ops Tapis.

A police team from Limbang Narcotics Crime Investigation conducted the operation on Friday.

Limbang District Police chief, Superintendent Mohd Bukhori Saffai said the operation involving seven officers led by ASP Anuar Md Ghazali was conducted around 12.30pm in several areas in the city centre.

He revealed the police had followed the suspect, 54, who was behaving suspiciously, which eventually led them to stopping him.

“During the inspection, we found various types of contraband cigarettes and liquor hidden in the back seat,” he said, adding that about 120 cartons of cigarettes and liquor were seized from the suspect.

“Initial investigation found that it is not the first time the suspect is involved in smuggling these items,” he said.

Mohd Bukhori said all of the contraband goods had been sent to Limbang Customs Department for further action.

It was learned that Customs had imposed RM10,000 tax on the smuggled goods.
