Penang police topple state’s largest drug syndicate

GEORGE TOWN: Police toppled the state’s biggest drug syndicate following the arrest of an Indonesian man and seizure of 3.9 kilogrammes of syabu worth RM800,000 at KM142.3 of the North-South Highway, near here last Saturday.
Penang police chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the man was detained in a regular road block carried out by the Elite Police Patrol Unit, at 1 am.
He said the police decided to inspect the Toyota Camry driven by the man after he was seen behaving in a suspicious manner, and found four unusually heavy soft drinks packets on the rear passenger seat.
“The suspect hid the drugs in the soft drinks packets, had no driver’s licence and was traveling north from Kuala Lumpur,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.
He said the 30-year-old man has been remanded under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Ayub said the man was believed to be part of an active syndicate and had tested positive for drugs.
The drugs were suspected to have been obtained from the south, meant for delivery to the syndicate in the northern region.
Saying the police were tracking down the rest of the syndicate, he called on the public to report any suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods. — Bernama
