14 years’ jail and four strokes for robbery

KUCHING: A 27-year-old man convicted of a robbery charge was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment and four strokes of the rotan by a Sessions Court here yesterday.
Masnurulzaiman Affendi, 27, from Kampung Rantau Panjang was found guilty of robbing a 49-year-old woman at her house at Stampin Tengah Road at about 11.50am on Nov 21 last year.
According to the facts of the case, the accused and three other persons had broken into the house where the woman was staying with her children. She was attacked by them and they took away her valuables.
Masnurulzaiman was caught and beaten up by the public while his three accomplices fled.
He robbed the victim of a Nokia phone and RM1,000 cash as well as a gold necklace and pair of gold earrings.
Masnurulzaiman was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code (amended charge) which provides for a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
Judge Timothy Finlayson Noel who presided over the case ordered the imprisonment term to take effect from the date of judgment, which was yesterday.
ASP Carl Patrick Ramesh prosecuted. Masnurulmaizan was not represented by any lawyer.
