SIBU: A total prize money of RM15,000 is on offer for the winners of nine selected premier events of the Sibu Open Track and Field Championship, slated to be held on Sept 1-2 at Stadium Tun Zaidi here.

Sibu Amateur Athletic Association (SAAA) chairman Dr Gregory Hii Sui Cheng said record breakers would also get an additional RM50 for the open category and RM20 for the U-14 and U-11 categories.

Hii said two additional events, the Open and U-14 categories long jump and the U-14 and U-11 high jump, were also included in this year edition following popular demand from the athletes.

The two latest sponsors to show their support were Prudential Agnes Team for the long jump event and SAAA for the high jump event.

SAAA is believed to be the only Amateur Athletic Association that is offering cash prizes to the top three winners of the selected events.

Besides the two latest addition, the previous events that carried the prize money incentives included the 100m (Open, U-14 and U-11 categories), 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles (U-14 and U-11 categories), 3000m and 5000m (Open category),  discuss (Open and U-14 categories), 800m (Open and U-14 categories)  and 400m (Open and U-14 categories).

The previous sponsors were KTS Sdn Bhd (100m Open category and 800m), Ta Ann Holding Bhd (100m U-14 and U-11), McDonalds (all hurdles events), Marathon Sports Club (3000m and 5000m), TN Sports (discuss) and 400m (Delta Leasing).

The top three winners from the nine selected premier events will get cash prizes ranging from RM300 to RM500.

In addition, Hii said team event winners for the open category would also get a separate cash incentive of RM500 for the champion, RM300 for the first runner-up and RM200 for the second runner-up.

The Boys’ and Girls’ U-14 team event winners will get RM300, RM200 and RM100 and the U-11 team event winners will get RM200, RM150 and RM100 respectively.

Hii expected this year’s Sibu Open Track and Field Championship to be another competitive event that would lure runners from outside Sibu. Entry fee is RM2 for the open category, RM1 for the U-14 and U-11 categories and RM3 for the team category.
