Mechanic jailed for theft

TAWAU: A local mechanic was sentenced to 18 months’ jail and one stroke of the cane by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for stealing.

Mohd Hafiz bin Awang Tanjong, 30, pleaded guilty before magistrate Edward Paul to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries up to ten years’ imprisonment and a fine.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Joan Lee told the court that the accused was caught on CCTV stealing a Komatsu crawler D60E clutch housing from NFC Trading workshop, Tiku Toad on July 18 this year at about 3.30pm. The equipment was worth about RM1,500.

Police investigation found that the accused had gone to the workshop to repair the steering hose of a forklift.

After the repair work was done, he loaded the clutch housing onto a Toyota Hilux cargo deck and sold it to a scrap metal dealer for RM73.

Based on the CCTV footage evidence, the accused was detained on July 25.

In a separate case here yesterday, a 24-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail by the court for stealing a motorcycle.

Mohd Madzrul bin Mohammad pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one year and seven years and a fine.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Joan Lee told the court that the accused stole a Honda Ex5 motorcycle at a house in Taman Ria 3, North Road on July 28 at about 3am. The machine belonged to one Mohd Azrin bin Bakri.

The facts of the case stated that the accused committed the offence with a friend by the name of Ugis.

They wheeled the motorcycle to a hilly area where the accused called another friend by the name of Kamal to help start the motorcycle.

The accused then sent Ugis home while he and Kamal took a joy ride on the motorcycle around town.

He was however arrested by police about 12pm on the same day in front of a house at Mawar Road. Kamal managed to escape on seeing the police.
