KOTA KINABALU: A taxi driver was charged yesterday with raping a 16-year-old girl about two years ago.

Abdul Salaman, 39, pleaded not guilty before High Court deputy registrar Amir Shah Amir Hassan to the statutory rape charge under Section 375 (b) of the Penal Code, which carries up to 20 years’ jail and whipping.

He allegedly committed the offence in a car at a village in Papar at 9pm on November 21, 2010.

Amir Shah, who sat as a Sessions Court judge, set September 5 this year for the management of the case.

He set bail at RM16,000 with two local sureties and ordered the accused to report himself to the Papar police station monthly until the disposal of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Azwan Aiman Wan Fakhruddin informed the court that the prosecution would produce eight witnesses to testify against Abdul Salaman.
