LONDON: National long distance swimmer Khoo Cai Lin failed to be in the last eight of the Women’s 800m freestyle at the 2012 Olympics when she swam to sixth spot in the swimming event held at the Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Swimming in Heats 2, the Malaysian clocked eight minutes 51.18 seconds, 16.000 adrift of the leader, Julia Hassler of Liechtenstein with 8:35.18s.

Only the top swimmers in each of the eight heats will qualify for the final. The 24-year-old from Selangor was among the last Malaysian athletes who got last-minute tickets to the Games.

She had qualified for the 800m freestyle when she surpassed the 8:51.82s qualifying mark under Category B at the national championship held at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, in May with the time of 8:49.28s.

At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Cai Lin took part in the 400m and 800m freestyle but her challenge stopped during the heats. — Bernama
