KUCHING: Syarikat Sesco Bhd (Sesco) has been urged to upgrade a current single-phase transformer which is responsible for supplying power to SJK Chung Hua Rantau Panjang and its surrounding areas in Batu Kawa to a three-phase transformer.

Batu Kawah assemblywoman Christina Chiew yesterday said the transformer needed to be relocated as well as the current location was too near to a newly completed basketball court.

She told a press conference here that the relocation must be done immediately to ensure the safety of the school’s pupils and staff.

“As part of the roof of the basketball court is only 1/2 metre away from the overhead cables, the concerned parties are worried that the cables might hit the roof if the wind is strong. This may cause power leakage and injure the pupils and staff of the school,” Chiew said.

Chiew wondered why Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) had approved the blue print of the basketball court in the first place.

“As for the transformer, the current capacity is unable to meet the demand especially after the upgrading of the school in 2009. Because of that, the school has always been experiencing power shortage and blackout,” Chiew added.

Chiew said Public Works Department (JKR) had recommended Sesco to upgrade the single-phase transformer to a three-phase one in 2009 following the upgrading of the school.

She claimed that the school had also written to JKR, PMC and Sesco on the matter.

However, nothing had been done by the power supply company.

Chiew pledged that she would write to the Deputy Education Minister Datuk Wee Ka Siong on the matter.

SJK Chung Hua Rantau Panjang has 92 pupils and 12 teachers.
