KANOWIT: The ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang’ campaign is not just about flying the national flag but it is also an occasion to understand the true meaning of independence and appreciate the peace, freedom and stability that comes with it.

This explanation was given by Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang when officiating at a ‘Semarak Merdeka Jalur Gemilang’ near Ar-Rahman Mosque here recently.

He said the country’s independence should always be appreciated, especially by the young generations, not only during Independence Day and Malaysia Day.

“Mutual respect and tolerance are the main ingredients of unity in our multi-racial country.

“All races regardless of culture and religion must maintain our togetherness and unity in the spirit of 1Malaysia towards achieving Vision 2020,” he said.

The event was jointly organised by Kanowit Information Department, Kanowit MP Service Centre, Ninth Infantry Brigade and Boustead Pelita Kanowit.

On a similar matter, Aaron told the people that the government had implemented various programmes like 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) and 1Malaysia clinics to help relieve the people’s burdens.

Meanwhile, some of the activities held during the event were distribution of 1Malaysia ‘bubur lambuk’ and national flags, launching of ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang’ campaign, donations to surau and mosques and breaking-of-fast ceremony.

There was also a ‘gotong royong’ to clean the mosque with assistance from personnel of 510 Territorial Army (TA) Regiment.

The event was attended by Kanowit acting district officer Ibrahim Kipli, Ninth Infantry Brigade staff chief Lt Col Kamarudzaman Abdul Thani, Sibu/Mukah divisional information officer Wasrin Jakaria, Kanowit police chief DSP Ismail Mahmud, Boustead Pelita plantation manager Hamdan Husin and Kanowit Information Department head Wan Mohd Zuki Wan Ismail.
