KUCHING: Dayak students must give emphasis to their studies to enhance their skills, knowledge and capabilities so that they can contribute significantly to nation building.

Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) deputy president Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, who made the call yesterday, directed his advice to students especially those who were not brilliant naturally.

The Kapit MP said Dayak students must work harder as not many are geniuses. Some of the youths were known to be late starters but the most important thing was for them to aim on becoming useful people who can contribute to society.

“There are many opportunities in acquiring tertiary education today. This is due to the government liberalising its education policy, permitting quality foreign universities and colleges to be set up here to provide more quality education to the people.

“Parents should find ways to utilise these opportunities,” said Nanta when officiating at the SDNU women’s chapter- Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) excellent students incentive and certificate presentation ceremony and educational talk held at Penview Hotel here.

Also present were SIDS chairperson Dato Sri Empiang Jabu, SDNU vice-president Anthony Banyan and SIDS secretary-general Datin Senorita Linang among some 150 guests of students, parents, SIDS members and organising chairperson Margaret Bedus.

Empiang in her speech earlier, advised students to plan their future career at an early stage so that they can work hard towards achieving the
target. She highlighted there are many professions and a wide range of job opportunities available today.

The students should explore all possibilities to realise their strength and interest towards achieving their future endeavour.

A total of 30 students who excelled in their UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM examination 2011 received their excellent achievement certificates and incentives.

After the event, Sarawak Dayak Graduate Association (SDGA) president Dr Dusit Jaul presented a motivational talk to students from six high schools in the city. This was followed by an examination preparation talk by Jimali Sunang.
