Jailed a year for breaking into grocery shop, stealing

KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to a year’s jail for housebreaking and theft of a grocery shop in Kampung Semariang Lama here in June this year.

Abdul Kudus Idris, 42, from Kampung Lintang appeared before Magistrate Gerald Empaling who convicted him after taking into consideration his mitigation and nature of the offence.

The offence was committed at about 2.45am on June 28 with three other persons.

One of his accomplices, Amit Abang, 46, was sentenced to six months’ jail after pleading guilty to a charge of trespassing under Section 448 of the Penal Code.

Two other persons are still at large.

Yesterday Abdul Kudus was convicted of a charge under Section 457 of the same code.

The fact of the case stated that the owner of the shop who is also the complainant, Mohamed Mazeerudin Gulam found his shop broken into and with the help of two friends, caught a man red-handed, but the other escaped.

Another two persons waiting inside a grey Myvi fled but the complainant managed to grab their car key.

Among the missing items were 15 boxes of various types of cigarettes, three boxes of chocolate and coins. Estimated loss was about RM1,000.

The police were informed and despatched to the scene where the suspect, identified as Amit, surrendered to them.

Abdul Kudus was arrested last week following a tip-off.

In another magistrates’ court, six men were slapped with a RM400 fine in default two months’ jail after they pleaded guilty to playing the illegal game of Holo.

The accused persons, aged 25 to 42, appeared before Magistrate Maris Agan who convicted them of a charge under Section 7 (2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

They admitted gambling at Kampung Tupong Tengah hall at about 10.45pm on last Saturday.

The cops seized a receptacle, three dice, a piece of cloth and table money worth RM37 during the raid. They all settled the fine.
