Cheat to stay longer in jail

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrate’s Court sentenced a convicted cheat from Kudat to two years’ jail and ordered him to be caned twice for cheating a man of RM3,500.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof yesterday imposed the sentence on Vincent Makasut, 38, after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of between one year and ten years plus whipping and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

Makasut who was earlier convicted of four similar offences and currently is spending time in jail for ten years, was ordered to serve the new sentence after completing his current sentences.

He had cheated a 47-year-old baker by inducing the latter into believing that a sum of RM3,500 was for a deposit to purchase a Proton Iswara Aeroback. The money handed over to the accused at a restaurant near the Perodua building in Inanam about 5pm on February 24, 2009.
