80 shuttlers vie for top honours

SIBU: A total of 80 shuttlers are vying for titles in the Sibu MY Centre Badminton Competition which began at its premises here last Tuesday evening.

The competition is divided into Boys’ & Girls’ U-15 Singles, Boys’ U-15 Doubles, Boys’ U-18 Singles and Doubles and Boys’ Open (team event).

Event organising chairman Sii Doh Leong said the aim of the tournament was to foster closer rapport among members of Sibu Methodist Church.

“Hopefully, through the competition, it will help build and bring together youth members closer to the Church.”

The Boys’ U-15 singles category attracted 19 players while the Girls’ U-15 singles registered six players.

The Boys’ U-18 singles attracted 15 players while 11 are vying for the titles in the Boys’ U-18 doubles.

The Boys’ Open has attracted 14 teams.

The championship is part of the series of sports activities held to mark MY Centre 6th anniversary celebration.

Sii said they had prepared attractive prizes, including cash awards.

Other competitions that had been held to celebrate the occasion include Frisbee and basketball.

A Chinese chess championship will be staged immediately after the closing of the badminton competition on Aug 11.
