Foreigner fined for keeping six passports

KOTA KINABALU: The Immigration Court yesterday fined a foreigner RM6,000, in default, six months’ jail for holding on to six passports belonging to other foreign nationals.

Sessions Court judge Azreena Aziz imposed the fine on Mohd Ibrahim Kader Maideen, 34, after he pleaded guilty to keeping the passports belonging to Indonesian and Indian nationals at a restaurant off Jalan Tuaran on July 8.

Mohd Ibrahim was convicted under Section 12 (1) (f) of the Passport Act 1966 which provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000, or a jail term of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction.

In a separate case, taxi driver Antany Jegannath Arumainayagan, 29, was fined RM3,000, in default, four months’ imprisonment, for using the passport of another person to enter Sabah.

The Sri Lankan committed the offence at the investigation unit of the Immigration Department on July 19.

The offence was framed under Section 12 (1) (b) of the Passport Act 1966 which is punishable by a fine of up to RM10,000, or a maximum jail of five years, or both, upon conviction.

The judge also ordered both accused persons to be referred to the Immigration thereafter.
