Gymnasts need new equipment

Posted on August 9, 2012, Thursday

KUCHING: Sarawak artistic gymnasts urgently need new training equipment and state-of the art apparatus for them to train effectively and realise their full potential.

“Our gymnasts have a lot of potential to be developed so that one day they can become national gymnasts and compete in international level.

“However, the apparatus that we use here need to be upgraded urgently.

“Some of the equipment has been in used for many years,” informed state artistic gymnastic team manager Tan Gek Hiong to The Borneo Post yesterday.

“Our gymnasts are very young and they have great potentials. We’ve got medals from all apparatus event in Sukma XV in Kuantan Pahang to prove. The training equipment isn’t cheap. It will take us some time to provide the best we could for our gymnasts,” added Tan.

Before making their debut at Sukma XV in June this year, the Sarawak artistic gymnastic team went to the renowned Raden Inten gymnastics training centre in Jakarta to have their intensive training.

“At first, we wanted to go to China as they are well-known for their world class facilities. After due consideration, we did not choose China because it was already too near the event and very costly,” Tan informed.

The state gymnasts are currently having their training session at the Gymnastic Centre, Petra Jaya and will be participating in the Back-up Athletes Sports Carnival in Selangor later this year.
