BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam’s ‘Charity Expedition for ALAF’ (CE-ALAF) is a first-of-its-kind charity drive that gives local runners and cyclists the opportunity to play a major part in helping underprivileged children stay in school, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The ALAF programme, which is short for “Advocating Lifelong learning for an Aspiring Future”, seeks to support the nation’s aspiration to build up a well-educated and highly skilled human resource pool by providing opportunities of educational progression to underprivileged students.

The charity expedition, which will consist of running, cycling and a charity bazaar, will be held on October 14 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

The event will feature five different sporting events – ’2.5km Fun Run’, ’5km Run’, ’10km Run’, ’21km Half-Marathon’ and ’53km Cycling Expedition’.

Prizes will be given to the top three winners of the 10km and 21km events which will be divided into men and women open categories and men and women Bruneian categories.

Cash prizes will be given to the winners of the men and women open categories for 10km and 21km, while overseas marathon packages including airfare and accommodation as well as overseas tournament registration fees will be presented to the top winners of the 10km and 21km men and women Bruneian categories.

According to the Deputy Head of Consumer Banking Division and Head of BIBD’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), Hjh Nurul Akmar bte Hj Mohd Jaafar, the decision to conduct a running and cycling expedition for the charity is due to the increase in the trend in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercising and running in Brunei.

The slogan for CE-ALAF is “Are you fit enough to sponsor a child’s education.”

Javed Ahmad, the Managing Director of BIBD, hoped that members of the public would come forward to support this unique charity drive.

The CE-ALAF is open to both local and international runners.

Those interested in taking part can register online via www.bibd.com.bn or www.bibdcharityexpedition.com. Registration forms can also be obtained at selected BIBD branches.

According to Ahmad Nazmie bin Hj Omar, a member of BIBD’s CSR group, photocopied or scanned copies of the registration forms will not be accepted as each form will have a specific registration number.

Registration for taking part in the charity event will close on September 15. Upon registration, participants will be given donation cards, which can only be collected at BIBD’s main branch in the capital, from August 13 onwards.

To encourage people to register online, the first 400 participants who register online will be entitled to free limited edition merchandise. Furthermore, they will be given an option to purchase an exclusive sweatband.

Meanwhile, the bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four companies who have agreed to support the charity expedition.

The four companies are: Active Network (Asia) Pte Ltd (official online administrative partner), which was represented by Senior Account Executive Chen Cheong Keng; DSignku Enterprise (official creative partner), which was represented by Creative Director Md Nur Muizz’ Azmi Hj Hasnani; Brunei Press Sdn Bhd (official media partnerY, which was represented by Deputy General Manager Hazizah Osman; and, AdXpert Marketing (official event logistics partner), which was represented by Business Development and Marketing Manager Janice Yong.

Signing on behalf of BIBD was Deputy Head of Consumer Banking Division and Head of CSR, Hjh Nurul Akmar bte Hj Mohd Jaafar.

The signing of the MoUs was witnessed by BIBD Managing Director Javed Ahmad.

The first charity expedition organised by BIBD was held last year to help raise funds for tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan, and through it the bank managed to raise $53,000.
