KUCHING: Three postmen were delivering more than letters and parcels as they were nabbed for drug trafficking activities on Thursday.
State Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) head Supt Moses Agat said initial investigation revealed the trio, aged 26 to 34, were actively involved in selling cannabis for at least the past six months.
“Acting on information received, a NCID team from district headquarters raided a house at Taman Dahlia, Mile 5 Jalan Matang, around 2am on Thursday and detained a 33-year-old postman.
“A search of the premises produced nine translucent packets containing suspected cannabis weighing roughly 75g,” he said during a press conference at state police headquarters here yesterday.
The postman, he added, led police to a nearby empty house where a further 38 translucent packets containing cannabis, weighing approximately 307g, were found.
Moses disclosed that further probe by police led to the arrest of a second postman, 26, at RPR Astana in Petra Jaya and the discovery of 51g of cannabis, bringing the total amount seized to 433g which had a street value of about RM7,800.
Interrogation of the duo enabled police to arrest their so-called supplier, who turned out to be a 34-year-old postman at an undisclosed location in Taman Tunku, Petra Jaya.
They have since been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction, and Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which carries a sentence of five years to life imprisonment and not less than 10 strokes of the cane.
Moses also revealed that a 44-year-old man, who works as a project coordinator for a local construction firm, was arrested the same day for trafficking in 540 Erimine 5 pills worth an estimated RM9,700.
The suspect was detained around 2.45pm at Taman Stutong Indah in Tabuan Jaya after a NCID team from state headquarters approached a Mitsubishi Storm at a parking lot in the area.
“The officers identified themselves to the subject from Ellis Road who, upon being questioned, surrendered a plastic bag containing 400 Erimine 5 pills.
“A search of his vehicle produced 140 pills hidden in the sunshade and rear of the vehicle, bringing the total amount seized to 540 pills weighing roughly 154.90g,” said Moses, adding the suspect had also been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
On a related matter, he disclosed that police had arrested 249 persons for various drug-related activities from July 23 to Aug 9 this year, with the bulk of arrest involving drug consumption (120 persons) and drug possession (68).
In terms of the amount of drugs seized during that period, police confiscated 463g of cannabis, 380g of syabu, 97g of ketamine, 943 Erimine 5 pills, 36 Ecstacy pills, 50 psychotropic pills and 41 Nospan pills.
