KUCHING: The 55th National Day should be a day of celebrating together as Malaysians regardless of political or personal issues.

Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that it was unhealthy to politicise the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.

“For me, Hari Kemerdekaan is a day we celebrate together, no matter what our issues are,” he said.

Malaysia has come far as a nation in those 55 years, he added.

“Many other countries who achieved independence before us are still trying to develop their own countries. What we have achieved is because our leaders acted through holistic planning.”

Wan Junaidi said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak managed to bring much development despite many challenges.

He was speaking during a ‘Touch Point’ Cheque and Minor Rural Project (MRP) Cheque presentation ceremony, which took place at Yayasan Sarawak.

A total of 170 individuals, among whom 54 were from the Pantai Damai area, 76 from Demak Laut, received MRP cheques totalling RM491,050.  Also present at the ceremony were Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Pemanca Rashidi Junai of Kuching North.
