Man jailed 18 years for causing death

LAHAD DATU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 29-year-old foreigner to 18 years’ imprisonment for causing death.

Jun Jun Bin Tampunan from Kampung Sri Hak pleaded guilty before judge M.Rajalingam to a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code which provides for a 30-year jail sentence and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Shukor Bin Abu Bakar told the court that the accused was arrested on January 17, following police investigation on a murder case at Manar Village Cafe in Jalan Tungku, on January 16.

According to the victim’s friend, they were drinking with two other friends in the cafe when they were attacked by five men and he suddenly saw the victim fall and the suspects fled.

They then rushed the victim to the hospital but he was confirmed dead by a medical assistant upon arrival.

On further investigation, the accused admitted to have stabbed the victim, Rodi Bin Usof, 29, on his right chest using a knife because the victim who was drunk at the time, wanted to attack him.

A forensic pathology specialist also confirmed that the victim died from stab wounds that injured his collarbone.

The accused also admitted that the knife seized from him and used in the incident belonged to him.

Jun Jun was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of arrest and to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation to his country of origin.
