KUCHING: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) have softly advised the Miri Dayak Sports and Recreation Club (Kesudam) to refrain from using the name ‘Tan Sri William Mawan Challenge Trophy’ as the title of the grand prize for the Dayak Badminton (Merdeka Day) Open 2012 competition.

The competition, which is to be organised by Kesudam will be held in Miri from August 31 to September 2 at the Miri Indoor Stadium. It is open to all Dayaks and those of mixed Dayak parentage.

“We have already organised a badminton tournament recently which offered the grand prize of the same name. We need to avoid confusion as they (Kesudam) is also organising a badminton tournament and both are Dayak-based organisations,” informed Anthony Banyan, the SDNU vice-president 1.

Anthony hence advised that should Kesudam wanted to affiliate or associate the tournament with Senior Minister and Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, they should look for other alternative titles.

It will also be good if there is a variety of challenge trophies offered for sporting events associated with the Dayaks.

Speaking during a dinner organised by SDNU in conjunction with the 2012 edition of the Dayak Closed Doubles Badminton Championship, Anthony added that Kesudam could use names like ‘Minister of Social Development Trophy’.

He hoped the association will also contact SDNU regarding the matter.
