Duo face life sentence for drug trafficking

KUCHING: Two postmen are facing a life sentence for allegedly trafficking dangerous drug (cannabis) early this month.

Abdul Malik Suaidi, 33, from Kampung Semaring and Muhammad Madzihi Othman, 27, from Kampung Malaysia Jaya pleaded not guilty to their respective charges.

The offences are listed under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same act. An offender can be whipped the maximum 10 strokes and jailed not more than five years on conviction.

Abdul Malik allegedly trafficked 75grammes (gross weight) of cannabis at a house at Taman Dahlia in Mile 5, Jalan Matang about 2am on Aug 9 while Madzihi allegedly possessed 51grammes of cannabis at his house in Kampung Malaysia Jaya about 3.30am on Aug 9.

Session Court Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad who presided over Abdul Malik’s case fixed Sept 14 for case management and Oct 15, 22 and Nov 16 for trial.

As for Madzihi, his case will be heard again on Sept 17 while the trial proper will be heard on Nov 1, 13 and 22.

The judge ordered them to be further remanded in prison pending the next appearance as the offence is non-bailable.

The duo has been remanded for seven days since their arrest last week. Another postman, 34, was released upon the expiry of his remand order.

ASP Carl Patrick Ramesh prosecuted while the two postmen were not represented by any lawyer.
