5 die, 7 injured in horrific accident

LAWAS: Five persons were killed in a horrific accident at Jalan Sundar in Lawas on Wednesday evening while seven others were injured, including four who are fighting for their lives in a Sabah hospital.

The driver of the Toyota van with 12 passengers on board was one of those who perished in the self accident after he lost control of the vehicle which slammed into a culvert.

Lawas OCPD DSP Fauzilan Abdul Aziz and head of Public Order Chief Inspector Liong Tindan confirmed that it was the worst fatal road accident in the district, saying the vehicle was speeding when the accident occurred at the junction of Lubok Batong in Sundar.

The van was heading towards Awat-Awat.

Those who died were Mariah Awang, 37, and her daughter Nur Khairunisa Nazwa Omar, 17, who had just returned from Kuching through Kota Kinabalu Airport for the Raya holidays.

The daughter was a polytechnic student in Kuching. She died on the spot while her mother died in Lawas Hospital.

Her father, Omar Abdul Rahman, who was critically injured, was rushed to a hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Three others were also sent there.

Also killed in the incident were Zaimah Mohd Taib, 12, and Nurul Husna Izzati Imbran, 17.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, who was on a working visit to the highlands of Long Sukang and Long Semadoh rushed to Lawas to visit the families of the victims and hand them his personal donations. He was accompanied by Awang Damit Ali Hasan who represented his elder brother, Batu Sari assemblyman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan who was in Kuching.

All the deceased were buried at the Kampung Awat Awat Muslim cemetery.
