KUCHING: The Education Ministry will decide whether to allow students to bring hand phones to school by year-end, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said the ministry needed to evaluate all stakeholders’ views before deciding whether to allow students to bring cellphones and iPads to school.

“We have heard a lot of different views, including from students in Sarawak’s rural areas, who have yet to receive wireless communication coverage,” he told reporters after handing-over cheques for Sarawak government-aided schools, which was witnessed by Energy, Green-Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin, here, Thursday.

During the ceremony, RM11.2 million was given out to 165 Chinese national-type schools and Chinese stream missionary schools, that have been receiving federal financial aid of RM60 million since 2008.

Wee said the ministry would also issue guidelines to control the use of communication gadgets at schools.

He also said that the ministry would provide some allocations for Sarawak rural schools for upgrading work on buildings, roof structure, furniture as well as to increase enrolment.- Bernama
