KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to two years in jail and fined RM400 in default of two months’ jail for robbery and also failing to produce MyKad to the authority.

Magistrate Maris Agan handed down the sentence upon the accused Izwansyah Mohammad, 25, from Kampung Tabuan Lot after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

On the first charge, he robbed a young person of her gold necklace at a shopping mall here about 2.30pm on May 5 this year.

The victim and her friend tried to apprehend the accused but he managed to escape from the scene.

The victim told the police that she recognised the accused whom many called ‘Kecek’.

She added she saw ‘Kecek’ with another man when he fled from the scene.

Initial investigations showed that the accused admitted to stealing the item and then selling it off to another man.

The accused’ second charge was that he failed to produce his MyKad after he was nabbed at a flat at Taman Samarindah about 8.50am on May 10.

The accused was convicted under Section 392 of the Penal Code for the robbery and Section 7 of the National Registration Act 1959 (78) for the other offence.

DPP Samira Khalili prosecuted while the accused was not represented by any lawyer.

In another case, a labourer pleaded not guilty to assaulting another man.

The section provides a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.

He allegedly caused hurt to one Rosie Dasid in front of a building at Taman Medan University about 2am on May 12 this year.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad ordered him to be released on a RM8,000 cash bail in a surety pending trial on Sept 7 while the case management will be on Aug 30.

He was remanded in prison as he could not furnish the bail as of yesterday.
