KUCHING: The Sarawak Senior Basketballers Association (SSABA) are eyeing for a top four finish in the 21st Asean Veteran Basketball Invitational Tournament in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei from Aug 23-26.
SSABA secretary Chai Kok Sam said they are hoping to do better than last year’s tournament that was held in Singapore where the team failed to get past the preliminary rounds.
“We will be fielding a seven-member team and two officials for the 60-years-old age group to the tournament that will be played at Hassanal Bolkiah National Indoor Stadium,” he said yesterday.
The players are Kuang King Kong, Chua Bak Song, Chong Kim Fat, Lam Chaw Fatt, Wong Sing Ling, Goh Sin Poh and Sim Meng Liang while the officials are Chu Kok Eng and Ting Tiong Hook who also assumes the role of team coach. Ting is also the chairman of SSABA.
“There will be a total of 10 teams vying for top honours in this year’s tournament that is divided into three categories namely the 40-year-old, 50-year-old and 60-year-old,” said Chai.
He added the objectives of the tournament were to encourage senior citizens to play basketball as a form of healthy exercise and to promote ties and friendship among the participating players.
Chai said SSABA will be sending another team to compete at the Sandakan Invitation Basketball Competition in Sandakan, Sabah from Aug 28 to Sept 3.
The players are former national cagers Lau Boon Hui and Ong Seng Huat, Chan Hock Pheng, Tan Pheng, Goh Han Young, Ho Chi Siong, Chin Ngik Leong, Lu Mung Pee and Loh Tet Sine.
Accompanying the team are team manager Kueh Nai Khiang and officials Lee Eng Siang, Ngu Chieng Leng, Kueh Pek Nai, Kueh Shook Pheng, Jandy Pionam Phiong and Theresia Lyanto.
Meanwhile, in a simple ceremony at the late Datuk Amar Wee Hood Teck’s residence yesterday, main sponsor for the Asean meet Datin Amar Kathryn Wee Hood Teck and Richard Wee presented the SSABA colours to SSABA chairman Ting Tiong Hook.
