TUARAN: Plans are afoot to further develop the oil and gas industry in the Kota Belud district with the proposal to set up an engineering centre in Kuala Abai.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, has in principle agreed to the proposal, according to Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

Speaking to reporters at his Hari Raya open house at his family’s residence yesterday, Abdul Rahman disclosed that the centre would eventually provide some 1,500 job opportunities for Sabahans.

“This is a new development for Kota Belud which has been traditionally strong in the agriculture and tourism sectors,” the Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary said.

“We are located near the new oil well recently discovered by Petronas and therefore we want to position Kota Belud in such a way as to be able to exploit the oil and gas industry. We have briefed the Chief Minister and the proposal has been accepted in principle.

“We are now looking at the next step,” he said.
