Local man jailed for drug possession and abuse

KOTA KINABALU: A local man was jailed for three months by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for drug possession and abuse.

Abdul Mumin Amat, 40 pleaded guilty to possessing 0.001 gram of syabu at a house in Putatan about 1.50am on June 12.

He was convicted under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000, or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction.

Abdul Mumin was also committed to prison for another three months for consuming syabu at the Putatan police station on the same day.

He pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act which carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or a jail term of up to two years, or both, on conviction.

However, he would only serve three months in prison after magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus ordered the custodial sentences to run concurrently.

The court also ordered him to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving sentence. Meanwhile, three other locals, Mohd Lani Samsudin, Mohd Syazwan Ngien Abdullah, Samsul Alimudin and 34-year old Indonesian Rick Meman pleaded guilty to separate charges of substance abuse under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Mohd Syazwan and Samsul admitted to committing the offence in Inanam on Aug 15 this year, while Mohd Lani and Rick committed the offence at the Kota Kinabalu police station and in Sepanggar respectively, also on the same day.

Mohd Lani, Mohd Syazwan and Samsul were released on bail, while Rick was ordered to be remanded under Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code pending disposal of the case.

Sentencing was deferred to Sept 26.
