KUCHING: Residents of Kampung Pak, Tekalong, Ijok in Nanga San, Sri Aman including staff and pupils of SRK Ijok are worried for their safety every time they use the suspension bridge to cross Nanga San.

Sri Aman DAP chairman Leon Jimat Donald said they had been receiving complaints from villagers that the bridge was tilting and sinking which apparently had not been repaired despite being the only means to cross the river.

“They are very upset because the bridge poses a danger to them as they commute using the suspension bridge almost every day.

“They are also very upset because in the past elections they were promised that a proper bridge would be built but until today there is not even a sign that a new bridge will be built,” said Leon in a statement issued to The Borneo Post yesterday

In this regard, he called on Sri Aman MP Masir Kujat and Simanggang assemblyman Datuk Francis Harden Hollis to “keep their promises” as the bridge was now posing grave danger to users.

Meanwhile, on the soil erosion at St Luke’s School in Sri Aman, Leon said it had been a long outstanding problem.

“Since the days when I was a student in St Luke’s in the 80s, the teachers and principals including local leaders have been talking about the erosion in St Luke’s and I wonder why the talks and plans still continue until today,” he questioned.

He said he dreaded to think of the damage it would wreck on the school including its teachers and students if the problem is not addressed.
