SIBU: Over 100 local golfers including defending champion, Lee Ka Tung are in the fray for the prestigious Sibu Golf Club (SGC) golf championship to be held from Aug 31 till Sept 2.

Organised as one of the highlights of SGC calendar of events, the annual event is open to all members and is aimed to provide a good avenue for golfers to showcase their skills.

According to SGC captain, Lau Hui Kui the event is also held to select winners for the statewide Merdeka Cup challenge with the prestigious State Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud challenge trophy up for grabs.

Only 24 golfers would be playing in the qualifying round on Sept 2 and there are daily hole-in-one prizes offered each is worth RM1,000.

“The event is also being held in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration and the response has been encouraging,” he said after receiving sponsorship from managing director of Joseph Design and Contract Sdn Bhd, Datuk Joseph Ting King Sung.

About 40 guests are invited to compete in the invitational category. The event is expected to tee off at 7.30am while the prizes presentation ceremony is at 1pm.

Lau called on golfers yet to register for the tournament to do so on or before Aug 28 by 5pm and they can register themselves at the golf club.
